The George Washington University Celebrates the Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “A GW Community Celebration of King: The Three Dimensions of a Complete Life.”
Tuesday, January 14 A March to a Dream 12pm-1:30pm ● Square 80 Join the community for a student and staff led march to the Lincoln and King Memorials. We will gather in Square 80, listen to commentary about the March on Washington, take an historic walk through campus, and convene for pictures and reflection at each monument site. Warm beverages will be provided.
Tuesday, January 14 “KING” – History Channel Documentary 7pm-9pm ● Marvin Center Amphitheater Explore forty years after Martin Luther King’s assassination as this documentary takes viewers through the extraordinary life and times of America’s civil rights visionary. KING goes beyond the legend to portray the man, the questions, the myths and, most importantly, the relevance of Dr. King’s message in today’s world.
Wednesday, January 15 Messages From the Mountaintop 9am-3pm ● Kogan Plaza Join the community in keeping Dr. King’s voice alive through reflections on King’s life and legacy while reading his lectures, sermons, and letters with passersby in Kogan Plaza. Thursday, January 16, 2014 The Community Celebration of King: Three Dimensions of a Complete Life Celebrate with us the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a focus on the following: King’s education and intellect with an emphasis on the Morehouse years; King’s spiritual life from seminary to “The Call” to pastor the Dexter Street Baptist: King’s activism and service with a focus on Montgomery, Selma, and the March on Washington. Each of our primary speakers brings a deeply personal interpretation to the telling of their story of King: Prof. Fran Buntman – Sociology – Tribute to Mandela George Rice – MSSC – Intellect and the Morehouse Years Prof. Robin Marcus – University Writing program = Spiritual Life Dr. Bernard Demczuk – Activism to the March on Washington
